As a school, district or department administrator, you find yourself in a precarious spot at times. While you want to make sure all of your students are safe and protected at all times, budget issues, and a lack of funds sometimes limits your ability to do what is truly needed. This unfortunate fact has negatively impacted the hearing health of student for many years, and is just now becoming a focus of health and safety experts.
Both the US Center for Disease Control and OSHA now have a laser like focus on the hearing health of our citizens. Originally this focus was on the workplace, but as more research has been completed, it is clear that much of the hearing damage found is occurring in Middle School, High School and Collegiate level music programs.
OSHA now requires hearing protection for participants in any activity that exceeds an average decibel rating of 85 decibels.
Middle school and high school band and orchestra programs are routinely measured exceeding 115 decibels (120 decibels is considered the threshold for pain), with collegiate programs routinely surpassing 118 decibels.
Marching bands have been measured at decibel ratings nearing 130.
What this means is that your kids are damaging their hearing each and every day that they play their instruments.
Due to the long-term liability involved, most new music rooms are being designed with sound absorbing technology and specialized acoustic controls. These items are not realistic for most existing programs.
Earplugs For Kids provides a comprehensive system to protect the hearing of your students now, and into the future. We work with you and your representatives to perform a full needs analysis. Then we schedule time to come out and make custom hearing protection for each student participating in a music program. Our products are specific to the needs of each student and we never offer a one-size-fits-all solution. After all, the only hearing protection that works is one that is used, and fits correctly. The hopes and dreams of these kids certainly deserve something that works.
